Certified Copies

We provide a certified copy verification service. Many agencies request or will accept certified copies of important documents in preference to originals. These must be certified by a solicitor who will check the original document then sign and date a photocopy to confirm that it is a true and exact copy of the original.

Documents can include:

Passports

Driving licences

Birth, death, or marriage certificates

Letters from government departments or hospitals

Bank or building society statements

Utility bills

We offer a certification service remotely by post. Send your original documents and photocopies to us and we will verify and return them to you directly. We also offer the option of sending your certified copies directly to the Foreign and Commonwealth and Development Office formerly known as the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO) for you. You may need to do this if another country has asked you to provide UK documentation and has stipulated that it must be legalised. If you prefer to do this yourself, you will find more information at gov.uk website.

Documentation certification is charged at a fixed fee of £10 per document.

New clients to the practice will attract an additional fee of £60 for registration as a new client.

VAT at the prevailing rate at the time of invoicing will be added to all fees.

Our prices above include:

  • taking your instructions,
  • providing advice as appropriate to your requirements
  • completing the signing docket on the document,
  • verifying your identification.
  • arranging for the document to be Apostilled by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, if applicable.

Our fee, above, does not include:

  • liaising with another solicitor to negotiate and agree the drafting of the document to be notarised;
  • preparing any accompanying Affidavit or document.

Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Legalising Documents (Apostille)

If you are required to use a document abroad, such as a birth, marriage or death certificate they might require to be legalised by the FCDO. We can arrange for these documents to be legalised on your behalf.

When a document is legalised, it confirms to officials in other countries that the document has been issued by a UK public official.

There is a fixed fee of £30 per document for this service.

We offer the option of sending your certified copies directly to the FCDO for you or you can do this yourself.  If you wish us to send on your documents postage or courier fees ranging from £5.50-£25, depending on where the document is being sent, will also be charged.  If you prefer to do this yourself, you will find more information at gov.uk website.

In addition, you will have to pay the FCDO fee. This is currently £30 per document for standard service.

The FCDO will check and legalise your document by attaching an apostille. This confirms that the signature, stamp and seal is genuine.

New clients to the practice will attract an additional fee of £60 for registration as a new client.

VAT at the prevailing rate at the time of invoicing will be added to all fees.
